![]() ![]() Dead Island 2 manages to create that atmosphere perfectly while still utilizing its over-the-top combat and dark humor to occasionally lighten the tone. Each character’s stats and skills open up a wide variety of possible playstyles, especially when adding on top of that the game’s numerous skill cards.Ī zombie apocalypse should feel frantic, stressful, eerie, and, at times, lonely. ![]() For example, I thoroughly enjoyed playing as Amy, who has maxed-out Agility and the Relief Pitcher and Divide and Conquer skills, which allow her to regain stamina when throwing a weapon at an enemy and grant her a minor damage boost when she attacks isolated zombies, respectively. There are six slayers to choose from in Dead Island 2, and while playing as one or another doesn't appear to change much about the game but the playable character's dialogue, they each have innate skills and stat strengths and weaknesses that are unique to them. Without spoiling anything about the story, I will say that (like in the first game) each playable Slayer is immune to the zombie virus. Dead Island 2 improves upon its predecessor with a substantial narrative and characters interesting enough to deserve proper closure to their stories, including the playable characters, the Slayers. It offered a narrative and characters that players could easily depart from without feeling any emotional draw or obligation to return. Dead Island certainly had a story and a variety of unique characters to tell it, but Techland's original zombie survival game still felt like more of a pizza parlor arcade experience than anything else. ![]()
